Malta | May 2019

In June 2018, I completed a journal exercise in which I wrote what “a Day in the Life” would be like for me a year and a half into the future. While many of the details of this fortune-telling exercise are yet to reveal themselves as true, there was one piece that has already come to fruition: In this entry, I wrote that I would spend a week in Malta while writing my dissertation. Last week, Jess, Shiva and I boarded our flight from LLA to Malta International Airport, where we spent a glorious four days balancing our time between writing and exploring Valletta, Sliema, Naxxar, and St Julien’s.

Arriving late Monday night, we checked into our hostel, Two Pillows Boutique Hostel. It served as a fantastic base from which we were able to easily travel, with our first stop Tuesday morning being the Sliema beach walk. From there we meandered through the winding streets into St. Julien’s, where we spent the afternoon soaking up the sun at the Intercontinental in St. George’s Bay.

As we were celebrating the end of our time together in the UK in conjunction with Jess’ upcoming birthday, we headed to Sanya Eco Spa and Yoga Hub for some rest and rejuvenation on day three.

For our final night, we upgraded to the “Blue Room” – a private room on the top floor of hostel. It was luxurious, with a balcony overlooking Sliema right down to the water. We spent the day writing and then got ready to head out for dinner in Valetta. Our earlier stop at Fly to Fly vintage had gained us a list of top spots to check out in Valetta, courtesy of the shop owner, Maria, and we sat on the steps outside Cafe Society cocktail bar before heading to the Harbour Club restaurant, where the birthday festivities continued in true style.

Malta captivated me with its crumbling buildings (Valetta, the capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage site), Mediterranean blues, and industrial infrastructure as the island nation builds up its amenities to accommodate its growing tourism industry. There was no shortage of good food, from fine dining to street cart donairs. Our Malta adventure was the epitome of a girls’ trip, and we savoured every relaxing moment.
